Professor Jim Lucey

Professor Jim Lucey is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and a Consultant Psychiatrist at St. Patrick’s University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. From 2008 to 2019 Prof Lucey served as Medical Director of St. Patrick`s Mental Health Service (SPMHS), Ireland`s oldest and largest independent not-for-profit Mental-Health provider.

Prof Lucey was formerly a governor of St Vincent’s Psychiatric Hospital (HSE) in Fairview Dublin, a member of the Health Committee of the Irish Medical Council, and a member of the board of the Mental Health Commission of Ireland. He has over 30 years of experience in clinical and academic psychiatry. Previous clinical appointments include a Consultant Psychiatrist at Connolly Hospital (HSE) Dublin, and a Consultant Psychiatrist at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital (NHS), London.

Dr Lucey was educated at St Michael’s College in Dublin and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and Kings College, University of London. He graduated MB, LRCPSI from RCSI in 1983 an MD from TCD in 1990 and a PhD from King’s in 1997.

He trained in psychiatry at St. Patrick`s Hospital in Dublin and at the Maudsley Hospital in London and at the Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College, London) where he was a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow. In 2006 and again in 2014 he studied leadership and health services delivery at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, USA.

Prof Lucey is a writer, broadcaster and public speaker. He has been a regular contributor to RTÉ radio speaking on the Today Show with Sean O’Rourke and is the author of two best-selling books on mental health ‘In My Room’ and ‘The Life Well-Lived’.

Recent public speaking engagements include ‘The Lucas Lecture’ for the Apothecary Society at the 2019 RCPI St Luke’s Festival and Keynote address at the Annual Mental Health & Wellbeing Summit. He has presented to many other clinical and non-clinical bodies including the RCPI, RCSI, ICGP, and the BMA.

Professor Lucey is a lay cannon of Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. His other interests include theatre and music, poetry and sport. He is a patron of the Young People’s Theatre Company (YPT) and a member of a Celtic-Persian fusion musical ensemble called the art of collaboration #TAOC, www.theartofcolaboration.ie

Recent performances of #TAOC were held at The Hugh Lane Gallery and The Séamus Heaney Exhibit at the Bank of Ireland and the workman’s club in Dublin.
